The South Yorkshire Apprenticeship Hub
About Us
It can feel stressful when supporting your young person in their decision on what they do after their GCSEs.
We also support individuals to:
- better understand apprenticeships as a training opportunity
- match them to vacancies with high quality providers and employers in the region
Our experienced team work with employers to:
- understand their business and skills needs
- provide impartial advice enabling them to benefit from apprenticeships
- connect them with high quality providers within the region who best serve their needs
- support them in preparation for employing an apprentice
Who are apprenticeships for?
Apprenticeships are open to almost everyone over the age of 16.
For businesses, they provide the opportunity to attract new talent into your business or upskill and retain existing talent, creating a skilled workforce for the future by ensuring employees are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in the long term. The growth and success of any business depends on its workforce and equipping the right people with the right skills can ultimately futureproof the organisation.
For individuals, an apprenticeship provides the opportunity to either start, redirect or progress your career. Apprentices include school and college leavers, university graduates, people looking to return to work and practicing professionals.
The opportunities are endless with apprenticeships and are a perfect way to gain real-life industry experience whilst in paid employment.
Working together for a bigger and better economy
We provide specialist help for businesses, with a particular focus on SMEs, to access talent across the region to tackle skills shortages, as well as information, advice and guidance services to those looking to undertake an apprenticeship, for parents, and employers looking to recruit.
Don’t just take our word for it, here’s what South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said about us:
That's what this new Apprenticeship Hub is all about; offering people, organisations, and businesses a 'one-stop shop' for all the information and support they need to get the right skills, in the right place, so we can all benefit from a better, bigger South Yorkshire economy.
South Yorkshire doesn't just need a bigger economy, we need a better economy. But if we're going to get there, and if everyone is going to be able to access the jobs and opportunities that new economy will bring, we need to make sure people have the right education and skills.

How apprenticeships are different from other jobs
As well as gaining excellent work experience, you will be working towards recognised apprenticeship standards. These standards will be directly relevant to the job that you are doing, whatever role you are working in.
How apprenticeships are different from other jobs
An apprenticeship is a great opportunity for anyone aged over 16 who is looking to train in a particular job and who would like to gain an industry-recognised qualification.
How apprenticeships are different from other jobs
There are a huge range of apprenticeships available covering more than 200 industries and 1,500 job roles available across various sectors. There are apprenticeships available at Intermediate, Advanced, Higher, and Degree levels ranging from Level 2 to Level 7.
Gone are the days where apprenticeships were restricted to ‘manual’ jobs. From digital, to IT, to graphic design to nursing to horticulture – there is an option for everyone.
How apprenticeships are different from other jobs
A recent survey conducted by the National Apprenticeship Service shows that 90 per cent of apprentices either gain employment with the employer that they completed their apprenticeship with, or they will go on to get another job.
Some apprentices also go on to further education at college or university.

By doing an apprenticeship, your young person will be immediately emersed into the world of work and gain valuable on-the-job experience, whilst earning money as they study and train. The other major plus is they won’t pay tuition fees like they would at university. They will also be meeting and working with industry professionals from day one.

How do Apprenticeships Align to Qualifications
From entry-level positions to management roles, there is an apprenticeship route for everyone.
It’s important to know how the apprenticeship aligns with education and qualification levels. It’s also a great way to know how apprentices can progress through the different levels as they progress throughout their career.
Apprenticeship qualification levels span from level two to level seven, and they are categorised as Intermediate, Advanced, Higher and Degree apprenticeships.
The apprenticeship levels are displayed below:
Level | Equivalent Education Level | |
---|---|---|
Intermediate | 2 | GCSE |
Advanced | 3 | A Level |
Higher | 4, 5, 6 and 7 | Foundation Degree and above |
Degree | 6 and 7 | Bachelors or Masters Degree |
