What is an Apprenticeship?

It can feel stressful when supporting your young person in their decision on what they do after their GCSEs.

It’s important to weigh up all the options available, find out as much information as you can, and sit down and go through the pros and cons of all opportunities.

Going to college or university are popular options for many people, but so is the opportunity to train and earn during an apprenticeship.

Over recent years, there has been a real shift in education and training options with many more now opting for the apprenticeship route.

From August to October 2022, the UK saw more than 22,000 apprentices enrolling in both Higher and Degree Level Apprenticeships.

How apprenticeships are different from other jobs

As well as gaining excellent work experience, you will be working towards recognised apprenticeship standards. These standards will be directly relevant to the job that you are doing, whatever role you are working in.

How apprenticeships are different from other jobs

An apprenticeship is a great opportunity for anyone aged over 16 who is looking to train in a particular job and who would like to gain an industry-recognised qualification.

How apprenticeships are different from other jobs

There are a huge range of apprenticeships available covering more than 200 industries and 1,500 job roles available across various sectors. There are apprenticeships available at Intermediate, Advanced, Higher, and Degree levels ranging from Level 2 to Level 7.

Gone are the days where apprenticeships were restricted to ‘manual’ jobs. From digital, to IT, to graphic design to nursing to horticulture – there is an option for everyone.

How apprenticeships are different from other jobs

A recent survey conducted by the National Apprenticeship Service shows that 90 per cent of apprentices either gain employment with the employer that they completed their apprenticeship with, or they will go on to get another job.

Some apprentices also go on to further education at college or university.
